This chapter examines the digital transformation of global mobility management through virtual assignments (VAs) and their alignment with the SAFE model – smart global talent managers, agile strategic advisors, flawless GM program designers, and efficient global people effectiveness experts. Virtual assignments provide cost-effective and flexible alternatives to traditional expatriation, addressing challenges such as reducing relocation costs and logistical barriers. However, they also present obstacles, including limited cross-cultural immersion and challenges in trust-building. Using qualitative data from ten global mobility specialists in Spanish SMEs, analyzed through interpretative phenomenological analysis, this chapter explores how VAs address key global mobility drivers, including filling competency gaps, facilitating knowledge transfer, maintaining organizational control, supporting employee development, and aligning career aspirations with organizational goals. This research highlights the potential of VAs to reshape global mobility strategies, integrating digital tools to balance operational efficiency with effective international talent management.en
