The Impact of Ogranisation Structure and Task Uncertainty on Project Performance - Case Wärtsilä

Abstract

How to measure the project performance and what are the factors that influence to the project performance have been issues that have been studied in management accounting. The purpose of this research was to see how the organisation structure and task uncertainty affect the project performance. The project performance results were evaluated by three factors: cost, quality and customer satisfaction.

The research was performed in Wärtsilä’s Power plants and Ship Power’s 4-stroke businesses with their sales and delivery personnel. The questionnaire was answered by about 40 persons and the result from these questionnaires were analysed by cross-tabulating the results with each other. Three tests were performed in order to see that both cost and customer satisfaction has significant interaction with organisation structure under high task uncertainty. Quality did not have significant interaction. The significant results were further analysed and compared how the high and low task uncertainty affects the results.
