The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Hedge Fund Alpha Generation

Abstract

This bachelor’s thesis examines the impact of artificial intelligence on hedge fund alpha generation. The purpose is to examine alpha in hedge funds and see how it’s evolved recently. Furthermore, the purpose is to look at changes in sources of alpha, and whether there can be seen effects of the use of artificial intelligence on excess returns, for example, in persistence. An important discussion in the literature is whether alpha measures the skill of the manager or is it just a technological edge.

Hedge funds manage trillions of dollars and thus can be seen as a major economic force. Artificial intelligence has been used in the hedge fund industry for years, but recent developments have made it a topic of interest. Generative artificial intelligence has advanced significantly over the past few years. The use of generative artificial intelligence has become increasingly prevalent.

The literature presents differing opinions. At the same time, there is mixed evidence regarding the effects of artificial intelligence on alpha generation in the long term. The literature agrees on technology being a central component in alpha creation. The findings show that artificial intelligence is used to create returns in the vast majority of hedge funds. Some studies raise the possibility that artificial intelligence might make strategies crowded.

Tämä kandidaatin tutkielma tutkii tekoälyn vaikutuksia rahastojen alphaan. Tarkoitus on tutkia alphaa rahastoissa ja sen muutoksia lähihistoriassa. Lisäksi tarkoituksena on tutkia mahdollista muutosta alphan lähteissä sekä voidaanko nähdä tulossa vaikutusta tekoälyn käytöstä. Esimerkiksi onko sillä vaikutusta alphan pysyvyyteen. Keskeinen näkökulma kirjallisuudessa on se, että heijastaako alpha ihmisen osaamista vain onko se seurausta teknologiasta.

Rahastot hallinnoivat miljardeja dollareita ja siten rahastot voidaan nähdä isona tekijänä maailmantaloudessa. Tekoälyä on käytetty rahastojen hallinnassa jo vuosia, mutta viimeaikaiset kehitykset tekoälyssä tekevät aiheesta kiinnostavan. Generatiivinen tekoäly on kehittynyt merkittävästi viime vuosien aikana. Generatiivisen tekoälyn käyttö on yleistynyt huomattavasti.

Kirjallisuus aiheesta esittää eriäviä mielipiteitä. Samaan aikaan, tutkimustulokset ovat ristiriidassa tekoälyn vaikutuksista, mutta kirjallisuus on samaa mieltä siitä, että teknologia on keskeinen komponentti alphan tuottamisessa. Tutkimustulokset osoittavat, että tekoälyä käytetään suurimmassa osassa rahastoista. Osa kirjallisuudesta esittää ajatuksen siitä, että tekoäly voi ruuhkauttaa strategioita ja siten heikentää alphaa.
