In the Nordic context, communication plays a pivotal role in managing stakeholder relationships, where strong, mutually beneficial ties foster trust and legitimacy. The high social capital of Nordic societies – anchored in both generalized and particularized trust – offers a distinctive setting to explore how communication professionals build and leverage stakeholder relationships for organizational and professional goals. This study examines Finnish communication leaders’ perceptions of utilizing social capital to achieve strategic communication objectives and strengthen stakeholder engagement. Drawing on Bourdieu’s concept of social capital, qualitative expert interviews provide empirical insights into its value in everyday professional practice. The research also investigates leaders’ communication styles in relation to Nordic communication principles. Findings underscore the strategic importance of social capital for both individual leaders and their organizations, while revealing evolving social expectations surrounding its use. Overall, this study advances understanding of Nordic strategic communication through Finnish perspectives, delivering both theoretical contributions and practical implications.
