Existing research usually considers strategizing occurring in the organizational level, during the practices such as meetings and workshops inside the organization. This study explores strategizing from a multilevel perspective. The purpose of this study is to understand how strategizing occurs in different meetings and workshops within the case company depending on the level in which they are held. Focus is on participation of internal and external actors, and how these take part and influence in strategizing.
The main concept of this study is strategy as practice, which provides comprehensive field of study for the practical research on strategy. Literature review presents the background and main themes of this field, common strategizing tools and techniques, and levels of this field. By strategizing this study refers to the processes of strategy work from formation to the implementation of the strategy. Multilevel perspective is used to study the strategizing within the case company, and more specifically, meetings and workshops are under examination.
The empirical study is based on a qualitative single case study. The empirical data was gathered from 11 interviews and observations made in a large multinational industrial company. The interviewees represented top and middle management, and employees of a case company. The case organization was chosen because of the opportunity to perform action research in this company and during the research time, the organization was creating a new strategy using top-down and bottom-up approach.
The findings of the study show that meetings and workshops have varying functions and causes in the strategizing based on the level. Multiple actors have also different ways to take part and influence in strategizing. This study examines the strategizing from a multiple perspective and enlarges the field of strategy as practice by focusing on the meetings and workshops as practices in these levels.
