The centralization of the different business functions can be viewed as mandatory action to receive competition advance. The centralized functions can focus on their core competencies and in this way bring value for the company. The purpose of this study is to understand what the key capabilities are for recognizing the core competences of Strategic Business Controller. The company has to know the key capabilities to understand the needed competences. Strategic Business Controller is perceived as a strategic business advisor, and as a business catalyst.
This study was a qualitative case study. The empirical data was collected by theme interviews with a half-structure questionnaire. Altogether six Controllers were interviewed, and the interviews were limited to one case company. Literary review of the study presents the researches, how to recognize core competences, and what kind of framework and tools can be used. The theoretical framework starts with the organizational competence connection to the individual personal development plan.
The research findings show that the business knowledge and influencing skills are the most important competences when working as a valuable business partner and this way for giving added value for the whole organization. Critical thinking and challenging of oneself and others were emphasized. There are three critical questions? Are the correct things done? Is the focus on the right points in the most critical issues, and are the right actions done? Intelligence capital is the key factor when developing competencies, it leads to own intent to do things better, develop oneself and other to achieve the goal of the organization, operational excellence. The research findings give the answers for research questions and ponder possible gaps between the role of Strategic Business Controller and the needed competencies. They also make some suggestion about how to overcome the seen challenges and concerns.
