Tiivistelmä
Today, with the exception of a limited number of items, such as raw materials, and furniture items, most products are distributed in packages. Packing aims to protect the products during the transportation and interim storage, and packages should provide necessary information for handlers, customs and consumers; as well as promote the sale purposes. Today the environmental perspective also has a strong influence on packing and especially on the amount of packing waste produced.
The primary objective of this thesis was to draw up global packing guidelines about outgoing spare part consignments of the case company. The actual research problems in this study are: a) what needs to be taken under consideration when designing packing operations and packages; b) what kind of requirements the case company might have from their point of view; c) what would the benefits of having these kinds of guidelines for a globally operating company?
This research was carried out in a form of a single case study for the case company Wärtsilä Finland Services. The research method used in this study was constructive and the data was collected by observing and interviewing several people involved with the subject matter, as well as by gathering various internal and external documents and instructions, and by examining international and local legislation, standards and specifications.
As a result of this thesis, the global packing guidelines were drawn up for the case company. Development areas and recommendations were introduced for further investigations and continuation of this project by the findings of this research.
