Tiivistelmä
The main aim of this Thesis is to compare different wireless communication technologies in terms of their applicability to AMR systems.
The theoretical aspects of AMR technology and its components are described in this Thesis. Moreover, some general terms of wireless communication theory such as radio spectrum, antennas, channel analysis, multiple access and modulation methods are discussed.
The wireless communication options for AMR have been classified into three different categories: short distance, medium distance and long distance technologies. Some well known solutions for every category are presented. The integration of a wireless solution to an AMR system is discussed in detail.
Moreover, some practical measurements have been made to evaluate the usable communication range of WLAN and ZigBee devices in different environments.
The Thesis is made for Telenor Cinclus Oy, which is one of the leading AMR product developers in Europe.
