Tiivistelmä
The objective of this study is to analyze foreign direct investments in services with the focus set on South Korean mobile internet markets as a possible investment destination for Finnish mobile internet service companies. In order to reach this objective, the theoretical part of the study begins by reviewing the characteristics of both services and mobile internet services. Then, the different internationalization modes that service companies have when entering the international markets are examined. Following this, the study will focus on analyzing theories related to foreign direct investments and their generalizations on services with emphasis set to find out important determinants, which affect the strategical foreign investment decisions.
The empirical part of the study analyzes South Korea as a destination for foreign direct investments in services. Case study focuses on examining the development of South Korea's mobile internet markets, size and the future outlook. Findings from the case study pointed out, that South Korea has a broad consumer base that has shown a tendency to actively use the mobile internet services. Although the most popular mobile internet services in South Korea appeared to be rather simple information and entertainment oriented, the future technology which will enable the development and offering of more sophisticated services seems to be well on the way in the country. Also, the case study brought up the fact that Korean government is intervening the local mobile internet market. It restricts foreign company's investments by limiting the maximum foreign ownership to minority venture. South Korea's mobile internet service markets might offer great investment and business opportunities for Finnish companies with its developed and relatively large market size, thus enabling them to make a good use of their widely recognized know-how on mobile services.
