The continuously changing technology of power system automation demands advanced and innovative applications for the protection system of the electricity grid and digital solutions. This thesis studied the crucial role of these technologies in current and future grid automation activities, looking beyond traditional approaches to emerging fields, including data centre automation, renewable grid integration, and various other sectors. A great emphasis was placed on the pre-sales stage, where a practical approach based on smart digitalized methods was discovered to improve business growth and speed up the sales cycle dramatically. Extensive research was undertaken to solve the difficulty of discovering untapped mar-ket prospects, indicating prospective resource allocation and corporate growth chances. The key areas of concentration were railway system integration, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, and green hydrogen-based storage systems. A comprehensive SWOT analysis was carried out to assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in both present and future market scenarios. This thesis discussed strategic advantages such as ABB's technology, resources, financial stability, international marketplace presence, potential obstacles associated with present regulatory background, high initial investments, and the complicated nature of implementing sophisticated technologies.
For instance, an example case on railway system automation was used to conduct a sample cost analysis. This case analysis illustrated how ABB's latest technology solutions might be implemented in new industries, shedding light on the economic feasibility and strategic advantages of entering new railway business segments. The importance of protection and cybersecurity in automated power grids was also discussed, highlighting the requirement for precise security measures to protect against cyber-attacks. As grid systems become more digitalized, they are more open to security issues that disturb operations and expose important data.
Overall, this thesis provides a complete assessment of present opportunities, obstacles, and prospects in future possible business and a strategic roadmap for ABB to strengthen its market position and drive innovation in this crucial area.
