- Exploring how the Metaverse Facilitates the Development of Entrepreneurial and Cross-Cultural Competencies in UAE Higher Education
ArtikkeliYasin, Naveed; Fatima, Tehreem; Samhouri, Dina; Zahoor, Nadia; Al Qahtani, Moza; Alhaddashi, Saif Abdullah; Tariq, Ali; Nazarian, Alireza (toim.); Foroudi, Pantea (toim.) (Routledge, 2026)This chapter discusses the importance of the metaverse in developing cross-cultural and entrepreneurial capabilities within institutions of higher learning (HEIs) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It examines the theoretical, pedagogical, and cross-cultural roles of the metaverse in human capital development and its alignment with the UAE’s national innovation policies, including the UAE Vision 2031 and the Dubai Metaverse Strategy. Additional topics in the chapter can be seen in experiential learning, cultural theories (Hofstede, GLOBE, Cultural Intelligence, and digital pedagogy (immersive learning). It describes how immersive learning platforms can combine to facilitate cross-cultural interaction, leadership, and entrepreneurial skills, training students to work in hybrid jobs and digitally mediated leadership positions. The chapter concludes with the challenges and opportunities of applying the metaverse, such as access issues, data ethics, cultural inclusion, and faculty engagement. It provides a case study of the EduVerse to demonstrate how immersive learning can be effectively integrated to develop entrepreneurial and cross-cultural management skills within HEIs. The chapter does not focus on the metaverse as a technological resource but as a pedagogical praxis that creates a gap between theory and embodied practice in education, both of which are future-ready. - Digital Twins in the Energy Industry and Emerging Three Innovation Ecosystems: Battery Factory, Data Center, and Greenhouse Farming Business Ecosystems: A Knowledge-based Scoping Review for Strategic Industrial Foresight Processes in Finland
ArtikkeliKaivo-Oja, Jari; Sievers, Henrik; Hermans, Raine; Uden, Lorna (toim.); Varlamis, Iraklis (toim.) (Springer, 2026)This study investigates three emerging innovation ecosystems and their Digital Twins: (1) the Data Center business innovation ecosystem, (2) the Battery Factory innovation ecosystem, and (3) the Greenhouse farming innovation ecosystem, together with Digital Twin (DT) energy industry solutions, aiming to identify technological potential, pathways for ecosystem/cluster growth and development, and policy implications. A systematic review of DT applications was conducted across conventional and renewable energy production, storage, and multi-energy systems. Both conventional and less conventional energy DTs were identified and reported. The three innovation business ecosystems were conceptualized and defined as summary tables integrating technological, organizational, and market dimensions. The study analyses how DT solutions can be mobilized to foster competitive new innovative industrial cluster business ecosystems and evaluates the associated strategic policy measures. - Thermal performance of an asphalt solar collector coupled to a water-source heat pump for domestic hot water: A system simulation
ArtikkeliCong, Lianghan; Lu, Shuaiyi; Jiang, Pan; Liu, Lan; Lü, Xiaoshu (Elsevier, 2026)Electrification is increasing the use of heat pumps for domestic hot water (DHW), but their performance remains strongly dependent on source temperature. This study evaluates whether an asphalt solar collector (ASC) integrated into a 600 m2 parking area can provide seasonal source-side preheating for a water-source heat pump in Kaunas, Lithuania (54.9°N). An hourly model was run for 2015–2024 using ERA5 meteorological data and measured DHW demand. Building and vehicle shadows were represented through clipped polygon unions, collector heat transfer and hydraulics through flow-regime-specific correlations, and heat-pump capacity and electricity use through a manufacturer-based EN 14511 performance map that included operating limits, cycling, backup heating, standby demand and hydraulic auxiliaries. Under fixed-flow control, the shaded collector delivered 25.06 kWh m−2 yr−1 and increased the heat-pump seasonal coefficient of performance from 3.58 to 4.01. After collector pumping was included, the system seasonal performance factor was 3.92 and net electricity use fell by 8.66%. Variable-flow strategies increased gross heat collection by 4.6–4.7%, but reduced net electricity savings to 6.60–7.04% because of higher pumping demand. Across collector areas of 300–900 m2 and storage volumes of 2.5–10 m3, the maximum electricity-saving ratio was 9.80%. Meaningful collection occurred mainly from April to October, and neither economic nor carbon payback was achieved within the assumed 25-year service life. The system should therefore be regarded as a seasonal efficiency measure rather than a year-round heat source, with stronger prospects in sunnier, less shaded locations or projects that can realise additional pavement-related benefits.
- Modularity as Configurational Approach to Smart Sustainable Product-Service Systems
ArtikkeliClemente, Diego Honorato; Hsuan, Juliana; Kohtamäki, Marko (toim.); Rabetino, Rodrigo (toim.); Parida, Vinit (toim.); Sjödin, David (toim.); Baines, Tim (toim.); Ziaee Bigdeli, Ali (toim.) (Palgrave Macmillan, 2026)Evolving digitalization and sustainability requirements have increased the need for more critical alignment of product-service-software modules within smart sustainable product-service systems. As an emerging topic within digital servitization literature, integrating product-service-software modules into coherent offerings is inherently complex. Modularity is a valuable approach to manage and reduce this complexity by breaking down offerings into more manageable modules. Despite its potential, modularity has been underexplored as configurational approach to product-service-software offerings, requiring further conceptualization and investigation. Against this backdrop, our study explores the role of modularity in configuring smart sustainable product-service systems (smart SPSS) in order to achieve sustainability and productivity goals. In developing a theoretical-conceptual work, we combined smart product-service systems, life cycle offering, sustainability, circular economy and modularity concepts to address both the content and process of modularization of offerings. First, we develop a hierarchical decomposition logic of offerings into finer levels of product-service-software modules. Second, we synthesized important attributes of modular systems and adapted them to the level of offerings. Third, our work proposes a final definition for modularity in smart SPSS by synthesizing all concepts discussed. Lastly, we provide both theoretical implications followed by a plethora of managerial implications for practitioners.
