Global employer branding : Influencing talent attraction and retention for current and prospective employees
Balic, Enis (2025-11-28)
Pro gradu -tutkielma
The global talent competition has intensified, making employer branding a strategic lever for attracting and retaining talent in multinational corporations. This thesis examines how a global employer brand influences perceptions of attraction and retention, clarifying the concept and its connection to corporate strategy. Guided by the social identity theory and person- organization fit theory, the study employs an interpretivist, qualitative design, utilizing semi- structured interviews with ten final year Finnish and German students all of whom had previous work experience (most had about one year, but a few up to two years) gained through internships, student jobs, traineeships, or full-time positions directly relevant to their respective disciplines. Findings indicate that global employer brands are comprising an instrumental-symbolic value proposition, credible promise-keeping systems (leadership, culture, and internal communication), and a global-local balance explicitly linked to strategic goals and KPIs (key performance indicators). Attraction is driven by faithfulness, value alignment, and honest signals during early touchpoints, with respondents highlighting crystal-clear, ethical communication over salary or role specifics. Retention hinges on fulfilling psychological contracts, providing development opportunities, offering reasonable treatment, and maintaining a sustainable work- life balance; consistent values in day-to-day practice strengthen identification and loyalty. The MNC setting both attracts (mobility, learning, prestige) and constrains (bureaucracy, depersonalization), requiring careful judgement of global and local aspects. The study contributes an integrated global employer brand view that connects brand assets to identity/fit mechanisms and to talent outcomes, and offers practical guidance: design honest, lived-value propositions; align global messaging with local realities; and measure promise-keeping through attraction/retention indicators.
Making sense of lean implementation : Study of a manufacturing MNC
Kaijanen, Liina (2025-11-11)
Pro gradu -tutkielma
Lean is a key approach for companies seeking to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and increase customer value, particularly in global markets. Although lean operations have been widely studied, research gaps remain concerning how managers commit to lean implementation during its early stages. The initial phase of implementation is critical, as it shapes managers’ perceptions of lean and significantly influences their commitment and the prioritization of implementation efforts. Identifying critical success factors helps clarify the prerequisites for commitment, such as top management support, increasing lean awareness, and defining a shared vision. Examining these factors in a multinational context where implementation is more complex due to cultural and environmental differences provides valuable insights into strengthening commitment across different organizational levels and units. The results highlight the importance of a clear and effectively communicated lean vision for fostering managerial commitment in the early stages of the implementation. Furthermore, the research emphasizes the development of lean awareness and training at all organizational levels to deepen understanding of the implemented practices and reduce resistance to change. The study also identifies that organizational changes, such as mergers and leadership transitions, can act as catalysts for strengthening lean expertise and as opportunities to promote successful adoption.
Understanding the Consumer Behavior: A Study on the Grocery Shopping Preferences, Challenges And Adaptations of the Sri Lankan Diaspora in Finland.
Udumulla, Thilini (2025-11-06)
Pro gradu -tutkielma
The paper explores grocery shopping preferences, challenges, and adaptations of the Sri Lankan diaspora in Finland to fill one of the critical gaps in consumer acculturation theory by exploring a small, non-Western diaspora community in highly concentrated Nordic retail markets. The study uses a sequential explanatory mixed-method design, which will involve quantitative survey data of 103 Sri Lankan residents in Finland and qualitative interviews of 5 families in Vaasa, which will be conducted using semi-structured interviews, and with the aim of providing a comprehensive analysis of both the quantitative consumption behavior and qualitative cultural experience. The research formulates and confirms the Diaspora Consumer Acculturation and Adaptation Model (DCAAM) and finds that there are five interdependent dimensions that affect consumption behavior, namely, Cultural Identity Maintenance, Market Integration Capability, Community Social Capital, Transnational Connectivity, and Economic Resource Accessibility. Three different typologies of consumption strategies appear: Integration-Adaptive (41.7%), Transnational-Connected (29.1%), and Market-Integrated (29.1%), with each typology having its own pattern of usage of the shopping channel and coping strategies. Important discoveries are that culture identity is highly maintained in the face of market limitations with 61.2% cooking traditional food every day and 73.8% altering recipes frequently under the influence of ingredient unavailable. The strongest predictor of consumption satisfaction is Community Social Capital (b=.269, p=.013) which is a strategic indicator of the diaspora networks. Market Integration Capability ( r=.327, p) and Consumption Satisfaction (r=.259, p=.008) exhibit positive correlations with Cultural Identity Maintenance, making the models of cultural preservation and market adaptation seem to be at cross purposes. Theoretically, the study also applies the acculturation theory to Nordic settings and small non-Western Diasporas, defies the time-based acculturation theories, and provides a synthesis of various frameworks (DCAAM, DCCF, and MRSF) in the form of a unified approach. In practice, researchers have found that, culturally responsive product assortment, community partnerships, and quality improvement have proven to offer business opportunities to retailers. To the policymakers, findings indicate that retail access is an integration dimension that should be given consideration by supporting ethnic entrepreneurship, and ensuring retail diversity in the urban planning. The limitations of the research are limited sample size, cross-sectional, and geographic focus which can be utilized in future research directions such as comparative studies, longitudinal follow-ups, and second-generation research.
Hylätyt lupaukset peliekosysteemin muutoksen ajurina : Vertaileva tapaustutkimus arvon yhteistuhosta ja yhteisluonnista
Olkkola, Linda (2025-11-13)
Pro gradu -tutkielma
Digitaalisten peliekosysteemien ja yhteisöjen merkityksen kasvaessa yritysten on yhä tärkeämpää ymmärtää arvonluonnin dynamiikkaa. Pro gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena on ymmärtää, miten vakiintuneen toimijan aiheuttama arvon yhteistuho mahdollistaa uuden haastajan aiheuttaman markkinahäiriön digitaalisissa peliekosysteemeissä. Tutkimus on toteutettu laadullisena, vertailevana tapaustutkimuksena. Aineisto on analysoitu abduktiivisella teema-analyysilla.
Battery-Insight-PSO : A machine learning model for accurate prediction of state of health and remaining useful life in lithium-ion batteries
Shiblee, Md Fazle Hasan; Laaksonen, Hannu (Elsevier, 2025-10-13)
Artikkeli
Condition based monitoring (CBM) of the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery has become very popular in recent years because of its wide usage as an energy storage for smart grids, power sources in various industrial equipment, electric vehicles (EVs), etc. As a result, predicting the state of health (SOH) and the remaining useful life (RUL) of Li-ion batteries with high accuracy ensures optimal performance and safe utilization, preventing non-scheduled failures and saving maintenance costs. This paper illustrates the significance of highly accurate SOH and RUL prediction for Li-ion batteries. This paper proposes a model called Battery-Insight-PSO, which employs the Extreme Gradient Boosting Regression (XGBoost) machine learning algorithm to forecast SOH and RUL. In this study, the Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm (PSO) is used to optimize different parameters of XGBoost for ensuring precise and reliable predictions of SOH and RUL for Li-ion batteries. In this study, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Li-ion Battery Aging Datasets and the NMC LCO 18650 battery dataset from the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) were analyzed. Additionally, the performance of Battery-Insight-PSO was compared with other machine learning algorithms. Machine learning models were evaluated using various performance metrics. The estimation errors of Battery-Insight-PSO are very low, which means that this model can be highly accurate in predicting SOH and RUL. Moreover, the R scores for the training and testing sets of this model also show high consistency with 0.9998 for each dataset, demonstrating high accuracy and reliable performance.
