Tiivistelmä
Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is a wireless metropolitan area network (WMAN) technology by using the IEEE 802.16 standard. The main purpose of IEEE 802.16 technologies is to provide last-mile broadband wireless access as an alternative to cable, digital subscriber line (DSL), or T1 service. The WiMAX Forum certified systems to provide fixed access, portable with simple mobility, and mobile wireless broadband connectivity without direct line-of-sight with a base station. WiMAX is a layer 1 (PHY or Physical layer) and layer 2 (MAC or Media Access Control layer) technology to support all demands driven by the target applications. The PHY layer is based on OFDM and OFDMA that provides multiplexing operation of data streams and it is well adapted for NLOS propagation environment in the 2 - 11 GHz frequency range. The MAC layer is based on the time-proven DOCSIS standard and can support bursty data traffic with high peak rate. MAC layer is also support of QoS for different types of services (VoIP, real-time and non real-time services, best effort etc). This thesis provides a description of the physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layers of IEEE 802.16.
WiMax offers a higher peak data rates and greater flexibility than third Generation (3G) and Wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) networks. This thesis provides the comparison of the WiMAX with the other wireless technology like 3G and Wi-Fi. This thesis explain the challenges involved in the network planning of a WiMax due to such features with a further description of step-by-step approach to WiMax network dimensioning, network planning and Optimization.
